Tips for Optimal Oral Healthcare
A healthy smile begins with a thorough oral care routine completed daily and bi-annual check-ups with a dentist. Keeping your teeth healthy between these appointments can be a very easy task with a stead, reliable routine.
We love to see our patients for general check-ups and provide dental services to further protect and brighten their smile. Here are some tips to enhance the quality of your oral health routine.
Brush Twice Daily Floss Often
Brushing your teeth twice daily is a common part of an oral care routine as it can be one of the most effective methods against many dental issues. Flossing compliments brushing by getting into the hard-to-reach spaces. Individuals should floss at least once a day. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria buildup in between teeth, preventing issues like periodontitis. If food debris and plaque is not removed, it can harden and cause tooth decay or gum disease.
The proper way to brush your teeth is to angle your toothbrush head at a 45-degree angle. Using the toothbrush, gently scrub teeth using circular motions with fluoridated toothpaste. We recommended spending a minimum of least two minutes brushing teeth.
Rinse with Mouthwash
Bacteria are the cause of bad breath. However, the persistent bad breath may be a sign of major decay. Mouthwashes can remove any bacteria left over from brushing and flossing. This addition can be done at any part of the day, not just after you brush your teeth. Many options for mouthwashes now have fluoride to strengthen dental enamel further.
Mouthwash eliminates germs in areas brushing or flossing can’t reach. Make sure to use non-alcoholic mouthwash to avoid dry mouth.
Massage Your Gums
Another way to keep the smile healthy is by massaging gums. Massaging the gums can promote blood circulation. If you have gum disease at any stage, this process assists the tissue in repairing itself.
Gently press the spaces between your tooth and gum with acupressure-like movements with a soft toothbrush. This can also be done with the tips of your pointer finger. Do this for two minutes on each side of the smile twice daily.
Keep a Healthy Diet
What you eat greatly affects how your body responds, and that includes your smile. Eating foods high in sugar contribute to higher acidity in between brushing, leaving teeth at higher risk for developing cavities.
Instead, eat fresh fruits and vegetables with tough fibers since these foods are generally highly nutritious while able to disrupt plaque. Drink lots of water in between meals to wash any debris and bacteria from teeth and keep the smile healthy.
