After dental implant surgery, proper care is essential for healing and successful integration of the implant with your bone and tissues. For the first month, extra care is required to protect the surgical site. Avoid disturbing the area during the initial days—do not rinse, spit, or touch the mouth for the first 24 hours.
Take all prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection. Begin using the prescribed oral rinse twice daily, along with a warm saltwater rinse 4–5 times a day (preferably after meals or snacks), starting 24 hours after surgery.
Some blood in saliva is normal during the first 24 hours. Bite gently on gauze pads to control bleeding, keeping steady pressure and repeating as needed until bleeding decreases.
As the anesthetic wears off, take your pain medication before discomfort begins. Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or Aleve® may also be used as directed.
Stick to soft foods initially, but resume a normal diet as tolerated. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
Keep the surgical site clean for proper healing. Continue brushing your teeth normally, but avoid sutures and the implant itself. Use prescribed antibiotic and saltwater rinses to disinfect the area.
Some swelling is normal. Keep your head elevated, limit physical activity, and apply ice packs as often as possible during the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.
Do not wear partial dentures, flippers, full dentures, retainers, or night guards for at least 10 days after surgery unless instructed otherwise by our office.
Smoking increases the risk of infection and implant failure. Avoid smoking for at least two weeks after surgery.
Recovery varies by patient and procedure. Focus on proper oral hygiene to allow the implant to fuse with the jawbone. Some swelling, bruising, or minor bleeding may occur, and oral discomfort should gradually improve. Healing time depends on whether immediate crown placement was done or if the implant is allowed to integrate first. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor progress.
